"Where do all of the little rocks in my gutters come from?"
The granular is added to asphalt shingles as a protective measure against UV rays and also as a fire retardant. Roof shingles are constantly exposed to the elements and thus in a loosing battle. The granular provides a layer of protection and without them, the shingle is left exposed and will deteriorate rapidly. If you don't maintain the shingle, meaning keep it flexible by making sure the oil hasn't dried out, you can't expect the shingles to stay functional for long.
Just like we maintain our asphalt roadways, we can maintain our asphalt roof shingles and extend the time that we will need to replace our roof shingles. Soy bean oil based rejuvenators have been used to rejuvenate asphalt parking lots and roadways for the past fifteen years.
Asphalt roofs usually start showing some signs of aging after five to ten years depending on region and environmental conditions. The shingle’s granular coating start washing into the gutters as the oils in the shingle dry up and the shingles loose their ability to hold the granular in place. Rejuvenating roof shingles will extend the time the shingles needs to be replaced.
PRI Labs (PRI is a national and global leader in materials testing and performance) tested the Greener Shingles rejuvenator and their proved after application, asphalt shingles showed an 86% improvement in granular adhesion.
A Greener Shingles dealer recently went back to a home that they rejuvenated a year prior and check the gutters, there were barley any granulares in the eaves. You can see his video testimonial in our video gallery: https://www.greenershingles.com/gallery
